Proactive Dental Care for Holistic Wellness

We advocate for a proactive approach to oral health. Many people think being pain-free is the same as having good dental health—a concept we call “false health.” Yet, just like any other part of your body, your mouth can have hidden issues that may progress silently until they become more serious.

Regular dental exams and cleanings are key to preventive care. They promote early detection and treatment of issues like cavities, gum disease, and other concerns before they cause discomfort.

You’re investing in a lifetime of healthy smiles by prioritizing routine checkups and cleanings. Book your next dental exam at Health First Dental today.

Our Preventative Maintenance Program

We create personalized preventative maintenance programs for all our patients, shifting focus from treatment to prevention. Our program is designed to meet your current needs while considering your future ones.

Your teeth and gums receive a professional cleaning, along with recommendations for a healthy smile or areas that may benefit from improvement. Hygienist visits are scheduled according to individual needs.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

Your health is our top priority, starting from your first visit. We take the time to get to know you, your health, and your health goals.

Your first visit can last about 1½ hours. During this comprehensive examination, Dr. Freiberg and one of our hygienists will thoroughly assess your dental and medical history and provide a professional cleaning.

Dr. Freiberg will use this information to create a prioritized treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, discuss it with you personally, and address any concerns or questions you may have.

First Visit Assessments & Imaging

Your first visit will include:

  • A complete examination of the head & neck
  • Functional evaluation of the TMJ (jaw joints)
  • Comprehensive intra-oral examination
  • Soft tissue examination
  • Periodontal examination to detect gum disease & bone loss
  • Microscopic evaluation of your oral bacteria to determine your risk for gum disease
  • Oral cancer examination, as recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society
  • Detailed record of each tooth’s condition (e.g., presence of decay, fillings, crowns, cracks)
  • Necessary digital radiographs (X-rays)
  • Digital photographs
  • Laser decontamination

Microscopic Evaluation

Our approach to routine cleanings goes beyond the traditional scope of simply removing plaque and tartar buildup.

We know that harmful bacteria in the mouth can affect your teeth, gums, and overall health. These bacteria can trigger immunological responses, leading to serious conditions such as periodontal disease, the loss of gum attachment, and jawbone loss.

Our innovative use of video microscopy allows us to identify and monitor these harmful bacteria, helping us assess your risk more accurately. We can measure the effectiveness of our treatments and your home care routines.

Preventing & Treating Gum Disease

What Is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues that support your teeth.

Gingivitis, the earliest stage, is characterized by swollen, red, and sometimes bleeding gums. It can be a wake-up call that requires attention, but with improved oral hygiene, it’s reversible.

If left untreated, however, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe infection that damages the bone supporting your teeth. This can lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss.

Addressing the Root Cause

We take gum disease seriously because research suggests a link between chronic gum inflammation and serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory disease.

Our goal is to address the root cause of periodontal disease—a buildup of harmful bacteria—through comprehensive treatment plans, patient education, and bacteria testing

By working together, we can help you maintain good oral health and minimize the risk of potential health complications.

Jaw Discomfort & TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a common condition affecting the joint that connects your jaw to your skull.

TMJ disorders can be caused by various factors, including teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw misalignment. Symptoms can vary but often include:

  • Significant jaw & facial discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Clicking or popping sounds with jaw movement
  • Limited jaw movement

We know that TMJD can be frustrating and uncomfortable, but we offer comprehensive care to help. A common treatment is dental appliances like nightguards, which can help protect your teeth and prevent grinding.
