Is There Fluoride in Calgary Water?

Fluoride has long been a topic of discussion in dentistry and public health. Some view it as a valuable tool in cavity prevention, while others question its long-term effects on the body.

At Health First Dental, we believe in informed decision-making and take a holistic, evidence-based approach to oral health.

One of the most common questions we hear from patients is: “Is there fluoride in Calgary’s water?” The answer is no—fluoride is not currently added to Calgary’s municipal water supply. But fluoridation is part of Calgary’s past and future.

Learn how fluoridation affects your oral health, why fluoride continues to be a debated topic, and how our practice supports people looking for fluoride-free options in their dental care.

A Brief History of Fluoride in Calgary

Calgary has had a back-and-forth relationship with water fluoridation. Following a plebiscite, the city first began adding fluoride to its water supply in 1991. However, in 2011, the Calgary City Council voted to stop the practice.

Municipal water remained fluoride-free, but that’s due to change in 2025. The 2021 Civic General Election voted to reintroduce fluoride to Calgary’s water supply. Although there have been repeated delays, the City of Calgary is expected to complete the reintroduction of fluoride to the drinking water supply in 2025.

Currently, naturally occurring fluoride may be present in small amounts due to environmental sources; however, Calgary’s water treatment system has not yet added fluoride artificially.

For families living in the city, the choice to include fluoride in daily health routines—whether through toothpaste, treatments, or supplements—is largely a personal one, and it’s important to consider the effects of fluoride, especially in children.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in soil, water, and various foods. While it has been typically used in dentistry because of its ability to strengthen enamel and help the tooth resist decay and damage, there are concerns about fluoride’s negative effects on human health.

Traditional dental practices also often recommend fluoride to help prevent cavities, particularly in children and populations with limited access to care.

However, fluoride doesn’t only interact with the teeth. It’s also absorbed by the body, stored in bones and tissues, and processed through the kidneys.

As a result, some people prefer to limit their fluoride exposure due to concerns about its potential long-term effects on their overall health. Excessive exposure to fluoride over time can increase the risk of fluorosis, thyroid problems, neurological problems, and other health concerns.

A Holistic Perspective on Fluoride Exposure

At Health First Dental, we practice biological dentistry, sometimes referred to as holistic dentistry. We look at the bigger picture through a science-backed lens—how dental materials, procedures, and practices influence your overall health, not just your mouth.

In line with our philosophy, we offer fluoride-free alternatives and support patients who want to make choices that align with their health values.

We also understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some people are comfortable using fluoride products and see value in the benefits. Others may have sensitivities, allergies, concern for its health effects, or other personal reasons for avoiding it.

We respect all perspectives and provide the information needed to support your decision-making.

Our role is to provide balanced, science-backed guidance. When it comes to fluoride, that includes discussing the research, reviewing your health history, and exploring alternatives when needed.

Dental Health Without Fluoride

Maintaining strong teeth and healthy gums doesn’t have to depend on fluoride. There are many ways to promote good oral health without it.

Brushing twice a day with fluoride-free toothpaste, flossing, eating a balanced diet rich in nutrients, and regularly visiting your dentist are foundational practices that can make a big difference.

Whether you choose fluoride-free care because of sensitivities, lifestyle choices, or health concerns, our holistic dental team in Calgary is here to help you navigate your family’s options.

The Ongoing Fluoride Debate

The conversation around fluoride is far from over. Some studies have raised questions about fluoride’s systemic effects, especially when exposure is frequent or long-term.

In recent years, researchers have begun exploring how fluoride may interact with the developing brains of children, the endocrine system, and people with kidney function concerns.

While the evidence is still developing, it reflects the need for careful consideration, especially when exposure comes from multiple sources, such as water, toothpaste, dental treatments, and certain processed foods.

Calgary’s initial decision to remove fluoride from its water in 2011 gave residents more control over their exposure. Moving forward, as fluoridation returns to Calgary water, our focus remains on empowering you with choices so you can make well-informed decisions that align with your personal values and oral health goals.

Recent studies and many holistic dental professionals have raised concerns about the long-term safety of fluoride, particularly with excessive exposure. Potential risks include dental fluorosis and cognitive issues in children and other health issues in individuals who may be more sensitive. For some people, the potential risks outweigh the benefits—especially when good oral hygiene practices and fluoride-free alternatives are available.
